Chapter Seven

The morning of the picnic, Courtney was awake before her alarm went off. She flicked her bedroom curtain aside. She’d dreamed of big, black storm clouds rumbling into Curly Bay, but the day was dawning bright and beautiful with only a few wisps of white hanging in the sky.

When she was dressed and ready, Peppa was sitting patiently by the front door, waiting right next to the hook that held her leash.

“I wasn’t going to take you today,” Courtney explained, feeling guilty. “I know it’s a dog-friendly event, but I’m going to have my hands full with all the dogs who still need homes. It’s important that they’re seen, otherwise nobody will know about them. Just think of all the dogs who’ve already been adopted, and simply because they got to go out in public a few times.

Peppa gave a sad huff.

“Right. You know some of those dogs, and they’re all going to be at the picnic. Fine. You can come, but make sure you behave yourself.”

Peppa bounced up onto her hind legs as soon as she saw her owner reaching for her leash, and she gave Courtney a big lick across the cheek as the clip snapped into place.

Jessi had come into the shelter early to make sure everyone was fed and walked. She was just finishing up with the cats when Courtney, Dora, Jessi, and Lisa all showed up to bring adoptable dogs to the picnic. The event would be far too stressful for any of the cats, but Courtney had printed up some nice pictures of them to set up on a table, along with adoption and foster information. It was a quick drive back over to the park, and Courtney planned to clip the free end of Peppa’s leash to her belt loop so that her hands would be free while she set up.

“Oh, look!” Courtney said to Lisa as they pulled into the parking lot. They’d taken Courtney’s car, and the back seat was literally packed with dogs. None of them seemed to mind. She’d spotted a sleek white van with ‘The Silver Platter’ written across the side. “Evelyn is already here. I wonder if anyone else has shown up yet.”

“The caterer won’t have much to set up at all if the tables and chairs haven’t arrived,” Lisa pointed out as she opened the back door and began unloading her charges. “By the looks of it, I’d say he’s not here yet.”

“I’m sure he will be. He seemed very competent, and we’re really pretty early as it is.” Courtney took Mike out of the back seat of the car. She’d worked with him a lot since he’d arrived at the shelter, and since he seemed to get along well with Peppa, he was a good candidate for her to keep with her. She also took out Samson, a little terrier mix who was exceedingly polite and calm, and who would serve as a great role model for Mike. Courtney thought Samson might have one of the hairless breeds in his family tree, because his coat was so short that it was barely there.
